Is it a scam?

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

I am continuously receiving emails titled Earn Degree and Diploma in 4 to 6 weeks or Earn a University Degree based on your professional experience or something. What do you think; is it legitimate? Online courses are different things, but how they can offer higher degrees in almost a month? Has anyone else received such emails? Please comment.

By the way, don’t think that I am a supporter of stealing, just trying to make some skits.

Another PDL in trouble

Saturday, August 19th, 2006

I thought they charge high interest rate, target military families and poor people to squeeze money, but that’s not all of their ill-activities. They also deprive their employees and do not pay them overtime.

After so many violations of state lending laws, now one payday loan company is under breach of Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Department of Labor alleged Quick Cash for not paying overtime to their employees. Q.C. decided to clear all the back logs. You never know, its time for them to adopt a more aggressive business method.

True picture of payday loans

Friday, August 18th, 2006

NUPGE, The National Union of Public and General Employees published a case details that shows how predatory payday lending sucking money. A OK Payday Loan Inc. charged 21% interest + $ 9.50 processing fee for every $ 50; surely it crossed the tolerance which is 60% interest rate per year. The class action lawsuit went against them.

The good thing is, A OK argued to differentiate the fees from the interest rate, but court rejected it. NUPGE has already started speaking against predatory lending activities. Obviously a good move!!!

My Today

Thursday, August 17th, 2006

Yahoo! Says:

Your easygoing style disguises how comfortable you are with being a leader. You get people to do what needs to be done, and they end up thinking that it’s their idea. What a happy combination!

I have always seen life from a different perspective; money has always taken the back seat in my planning. I know money matters, but spending a rainy day with my Granny is more precious to me.

Now, somehow, I have started to feel that people are not getting my qualities correctly (few exceptions are there). I really do not know should I change myself and become a bit extrovert?

Universal Default Clause and credit card users

Friday, August 11th, 2006

Most of the credit card issuers are using Universal Default Clause in the terms of service that consumer agree to obey while applying for a new card. Universal default clause is included in the fineprint of the agreement. Unfortunately maximum credit card users ignore this part and remain in darkness.

This clause enables credit card companies to change the terms if the user fails to pay bills on time to any of his creditors. Say you have two credit cards:-

  1. with ABC Credit Card Company
  2. with XYZ Credit Card Company

Now if you miss a payment to XYZ Company; ABC Company identifies you as a risky consumer and increases the rate of interest for you. I have asked few people if they knew about this and I realized that people rarely care about what is there in the agreement paper.

Credit Card Companies check consumers’ credit report on a regular basis – monthly, quarterly or yearly and adjust interest rate accordingly. So the company charging less interest might turn up as extremely costly any day.

Read books and get a better credit score

Friday, August 11th, 2006

Get a library membership, take home books, read or just keep it in the shelf (its your choice completely) and return the book timely – your credit score will improve

Library System is Salt Lake City is going to bring a revolution. Unpaid fines would be recovered by a collection agency from September 18 this year. Hence if you return your books timely, your score goes up and if you are not regular with your return dates…you are gonna get collection item in your credit report.

Agency trying to collect fraudulent accounts

Monday, August 7th, 2006

While going through the forum I got surprised to read that Creditor and subsequent collection agencies sold out the account that was opened fraudulently. The victim lost his/her identity and the thief opened these accounts with victim’s name. Now after long days, collection agencies are calling the person asking for money, as usual. Disputing the debts, sending tons of letters are of no avail.

I know, if this collection agency even stops, they would resell it to another one. What is the remedy? Will the ball keep rolling forever? I know, once the accounts are past SOL, no one can force the victim to pay it, however, there should be a better cure. What do you say?

AG brings lawsuit against Fast Cash, California

Saturday, August 5th, 2006

Allegations against Fast Cash:

  • Charged extremely high amounts from consumers.
  • Tried to impose settlement and pressurized them for money.
  • Misled court and won a judgment against consumers.

The last one is interesting: Fast Cash brought check fraud charge against default consumers, but did not disclose to court that all these checks were against payday loan. Post-dated checks are not covered by check fraud law, yet court issued order against the consumers because they did not show up in the court. But later Attorney General has taken step against Fast Cash. It is expected that law will reign.
